The Science of Education…
Advancing the Practice of Neurosurgery
The Congress of Neurological Surgeons is committed to incorporating the best and newest cognitive and educational science into the
design of a compelling and effective educational experience for today’s neurosurgeons.
The 2008 CNS Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, will include many new learning formats throughout
the meeting. In the preliminary program, look for these symbols to help you identify the courses and
sessions that best suit your personal learning style.
| Integrated Medical LearningSM (IML) |
| Integrated Medical LearningSM allows participants to define the content and direction of sessions targeted at the most
practical and important clinical and scientific questions of the day. Learners evaluate key evidence, interact with faculty, and define current and future practice.
IML: Community Learning – IML returns to the General Scientific Session, allowing learners to directly interact with international experts in
neurosurgical science, evidence and practice via personal handheld devices and laptop computers.
IML: Clinical Science – IML is extended to every subspecialty in sessions focused on key and controversial clinical topics. See the opinions of peers
reflected in real time digital polling.
| Consensus Sessions |
Consensus Sessions – Consensus Sessions allow participants to define and discuss the most important socioeconomic, ethical
and professional issues facing neurosurgery today. Expert presentations, member participation and interactive polling define directions
for organized neurosurgery.
| Case Based Learning |
Case Based Learning – The Community of Neurosurgery assembled in Orlando will tackle challenging neurosurgical cases.
Live 3-D Cadaveric Demonstrations – This digital presentation of 3-D dissections by surgical leaders has become a “must see” event at the CNS Annual Meeting.
Cases and Coffee with the Masters – Review cases submitted by participants in smaller subspecialty groups with leading experts.
Digital Video Masters – The Thursday General Scientific Session will highlight surgical video presentation from masters in every field.
| Toolkit Sessions |
Toolkit Sessions– Neurosurgery is defined by complex cognitive and technical skills and their application to clinical care.
Beginning in Orlando, look for Toolkit learning sessions that present basic skills and information you can apply
immediately and at home in your daily practice and professional life.
General Scientific Sessions – Toolkit lectures present the basics of translational development, clinical trials, and evaluation of clinical experience, followed by
examples of their most successful application by international neurosurgical leaders.
Medical Evidence Courses – Look for Practical Course 20 on Sunday morning, which allows participants to learn the fundamentals and pearls of statistical
design, meta-analysis, clinical evidence, and guidelines formulation. Then apply these skills to evaluate current literature during PC 30 that afternoon.
Neurosurgeon as Educator: Making an Indelible Impression – Experts from the
Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida discuss methods for enhancing public speaking and effectively using presentation tools
in professional presentations.
Look for other toolkit sessions throughout the meeting in practical courses, luncheon seminars and more!
