Washington Committee: Capitol Connection

Medical Liability Reform

Federal medical liability reform is the Washington Committee’s top priority. No specialty has been impacted by skyrocketing insurance premiums and out-of-control jury awards more than neurosurgeons. In many parts of the country, patients have lost access to timely neurosurgical care because neurosurgeons have been driven out of the OR, off on-call roosters and out of practice. The WC will continue to lobby on this issue on a daily basis until significant federal medical liability reform is passed by both the House and Senate and signed into law.

In order maximize exposure and effectiveness, neurosurgery has taken a multi-faceted approach to this issue. Besides our own lobbying efforts, neurosurgery also works with Doctors for Medical Liability Reform, the Alliance of Specialty Medicine and the Health Coalition on Liability and Access. In addition, the American Neurological Surgery Political Action Committee is dedicated to supporting candidates who support federal medical liability reform.
